Two Days In My Life

After my early young adulthood as an Art lover, and before I focused on Art, again, I spent about 15 years in Music. Early on, I was on the road with a band, based out of Miami, Florida, for five years. Towards the end of 1980, things were getting really bad in South Florida, inspiring the TV show “Miami Vice,” which after having lived through the reality, I found hysterical. It got so bad, the word was that there so many murders the only cases that were being investigated were when a cop was killed.

Around this time, we took a gig playing a party in Coconut Grove. Not something we ever did- before or after, but it was for a friend of a friend who loved the band, and we liked the idea. “Hey, I’m having a big party and it would be so great if you guys came and played” kind of thing. He made it worth our while to take our gear off the stage of the club we were house band at on Miracle Mile, so what the heck. It was an afternoon outdoor job, and we were up on a hill looking down over the large lawn on a road between us and a row of houses lining the water. Suddenly, a group of police cars descended on the scene across that road. It was a raid. A drug bust. Then the host/our boss for this gig, came over and said “Keep playing.” When trouble starts in a club or a bar, the boss ALWAYS comes over and says “Keep playing,” (like I imagine the boss did on the Titanic) while everyone else is falling all over themselves rushing to get to the exit. “Keep playing.” Like when a riot broke out in a biker bar we were playing in. But that’s a different story.

My blonde 1978 Fender Fretless Precision Bass. I went Fretless after I met the late, great Jaco Pastorius, the genius of the Bass, and a Fretless player, in 1977.

It’s funny how the guys from the union, the AF of M, are never around at those times- only when someone playing was not a member. We looked at each other, the girls dancing in bikinis in front of us, glanced at our cars parked behind us, and then at the unfolding drama going on across the street in front of us. Don Johnson’s got nothing on me. I’m living vice in Miami. 

If gunplay broke out, we might well be in the innocent line of fire, like too many others, before or since. 

Luckily, it proceeded without bullets, a line of cops escorting suspects emerged, and that was the final scene on a long and eventful road trip, full of  unexpected turns, on my journey into full adulthood. Time to go. It so happens that Paul, a friend in another band I had worked with, called to say he was leaving and moving to NYC. He offered to take my stuff with him if I wanted to get out.  

Hmmmm…After some thought, and discussion with my then girlfriend, a local, I decided to take him up on it and move back. Paul and his girlfriend, who went from being a waitress a few years earlier, to being a member of an internationally known band (not her boyfriend’s) a few years later, pulled up with a large trailer hooked to their car and the three of us loaded all of my belongings into it, and off they went. 

A few days later, I got into my Porsche 914 and drove it from Miami to Orlando and we both got on the AutoTrain. I had made the complete 27 hour nonstop Miami to NYC drive too many times to do it once more. The ride was pleasant enough, though I didn’t get much, if any, sleep, and woke early on Monday, December 8th, 1980. After detraining near Washington, DC, I drove the rest of the 5+ hours to NYC, where the rest of my life would begin.

Shortly after I arrived at my parent’s house I heard the news that John Lennon had just been shot and killed in Manhattan, outside his home at The Dakota. 

WHAT??????!

It was just unfathomable. It still is. Even for someone who lived through JFK’s assassination, and saw Oswald get killed, live, on television. Someone who had heard RFK’s assassination live on the radio. Someone who had lived through the assassination of Martin Luther King. Someone who remembers Malcolm X getting murdered. Murder is not something you ever “get used to.” Murder of such great men, each cut down in their prime, is a crime against humanity.

And murder was exactly why I left Miami!

So began the rest of my life…

December 8th, 2020

I took the C train uptown and got off at West 72nd Street to go The Dakota to pay my respects. Arriving, I was greeted on the platform by Yoko Ono’s transformative Sky mosaic mural. The north side of the station, ironically, is directly underneath The Dakota, where Yoko still lives, I believe1.

After admiring it and its “Imagine Peace” section, and thinking, “Gee, countless millennia of war hasn’t worked out so well, maybe it IS time to give peace a chance…?,” I headed up the stairs and was greeted by a sky that looked remarkably like the mural.

I turned the corner onto West 72nd Street and was greeted by no one. The sidewalk was empty. Down the block, in front of The Dakota, where it happened, stood two uniformed building employees, as usual. I stood for a few minutes on the sidewalk, taking in the scene, and thinking about what had happened 40 years ago today.

It almost seemed like I was there on the wrong day. Then, I spotted one small bouquet left by a family.

Across Central Park West, looking into Central Park, I could see a long line of visitors waiting to enter the Strawberry Fields section of the Park, but no one else was here, allowing me a private moment in a place where many people live, but which has always reminded me of this day 40 years ago whenever I’ve passed it.

I walked down the street until I came to the spot. I stood there, briefly, alone with the 2 Dakota staff members.

In NYC, particularly in Manhattan, everywhere you look and everywhere you walk, you’re walking on history. And the place is not nearly as old as any city in Europe or many other cities elsewhere. Here is one such spot. Passing it now, you’d have absolutely no idea something horrible and world changing happened right here, because it happened 40 years ago. 40 Years. John Lennon was born on October 9, 1940, during the Nazi Blitz of Liverpool. He had just turned 40 when he died. He’s now been dead for almost as long as he was alive.

My thoughts turned to another fact, as what had happened in all that time raced through my mind. Each and every time something’s happened, like 9/11, and all the rest, sooner or later, I wondered- “What would John Lennon say right now?” In addition to everything else he was, Liverpool’s John Lennon was one of our most prominent, and proud, New Yorkers, and a citizen of the world.

On December 8th, 1980, we were all denied knowing

for the rest of time. 

Now, as I sit here after getting back from West 72nd Street, I’m left to wonder- How would the world have been different? 

If you think that’s a questionable question, consider this- There are some who believe that The Beatles played a roll, perhaps the KEY role, in the collapse of the USSR2, in spite of all the countless billions spent to do it by other means, as seen in the PBS Documentary, “How the Beatles Rocked the Kremlin,” from 2009. A grainy video of Part 1, is below (Part 2. Part 3. Part 4. Part 5)-

If that’s not helping “give peace a chance,”  I’m not sure we’ve seen much else that is. It’s something that needs to be more closely studied, I think. If it’s true, then we’ve VASTLY underestimated the achievement of the Beatles, already the most revolutionary cultural force of my lifetime. And, we’ve completely ignored the lesson.

Even still, there are hundreds of millions who would have been very interested in what John Lennon had to say on any topic had he lived. Like there would have been to hear what JFK, RFK, MLK or Malcolm X would have said had they lived. 

If all of them had lived, I think this world would be quite a different place today. Along with John’s loss, today I mourn that. Again.

December 8th, 1980 was a day my life, and the world, changed. Neither have been the same since. It’s up to those who remember those we’ve lost to keep their memory & their messages alive.

Yoko Ono: With All Due Respect

A new occasional series. Last year, I ran “Words to Live By By Man Ray,” which featured selections from the wonderful book, “Man Ray: Writings on Art,” by this unique, multitalented Artist. This year, I’m going to feature examples from the book, “Yoko Ono: Lumiere de L’aube,” the catalog for a 2016 retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art Lyon (macLYON), France, newly released in the USA. This is the most up to date and comprehensive look at Yoko Ono’s multifaceted career yet released. As such, it’s a terrific place to meditate on her achievement. 

A large and important 50+ year oeuvre deserves a beautiful, large book. Mind the binding, though.

As time has gone on, I’ve gotten further and further away from the Music side of my passion in these pages, but it doesn’t take any Musical background to know that Yoko Ono was (and might still be in some quarters) one of the most loathed figures in the entire history of popular Music since her name first became well known in the late 1960’s, as the partner of John Lennon. As the world was to find out over these intervening 50 years, NOTHING stops her. Now, as we approach the 60 year mark of her career, as the millennium has progressed, the public has been coming around to appreciating her Art and her Music.

I’ve made no secret of my admiration for Yoko in these pages. I realize that her Music is a tough nut for many to crack, but even if you want to leave that side of her work aside, in my view, her Art (and total achievement) remains under appreciated.

How is this possible, Nighthawk? She’s incredibly famous, incredibly rich (I imagine), a legend, and has been the subject of the traveling retrospective, “YES Yoko Ono” which toured the USA and Japan in 2000-01, and at MoMA, where she was only the 10th woman given a one-woman show by 20151, as well as having numerous gallery shows. What I’m talking about is her accomplishment. Her place in the history of the Art of our time.  

Yoko Ono is one of the most important Artists of the second half of the 20th Century. Her accomplishment is staggering, as Yoko Ono: Lumiere de L’aube, shows. Yes, staggering. And, wonderful…beautiful. As time goes on, I firmly believe her stock is only going to rise in the eyes of “Art History.”

I’m going to delve into exactly what I mean and attempt to back this big statement up with examples in future installments, but for this one, I want to start at the beginning…the first page in this huge 500 page, 10 pound book, who’s title, “Lumiere de L’aube,” translates as “Light of Dawn.”

The book begins with Yoko’s revealing Introduction. Opposite this photo of her family  from 1935, she has written the following-

I will say for now, that if I chose one word to sum of her work, it would be “alive.” Ms. Ono’s work is, almost always, fully alive.

I wonder if ANY Art could accomplish, or has accomplished, more than that.

BookMarks (a series that looks at books relevant to each Post)- Yoko Ono: Lumiere de L’aube, by Thierry Raspail, was published by Somogy Art Publishers, in a bilingual English/French edition on June 1, 2018, with texts by the Artist, Annie Claustres, Mathie Copeland, Stephane Davet, Jon Hendricks, Emma Lavigne and Olivier Lussac, and countless new and historic Photos. It augments, and updates, the two prior standard references to her work, Y E S, cowritten with Alexandra Monroe (one of the chief curators of the brilliant Guggenheim Museum Chinese Contemporary Art Retrospective, 2017-18, which I wrote about here), in 2000, the catalog for her traveling retrospective that year, and Yoko Ono: One Woman Show, 1960-1971, the catalog for her MoMA show in 2015, and supplements her own books, Grapefruit, Instruction Paintings, Memories of John Lennon, and Acorn, among them. I’d recommend her books before getting to the retrospectives. In my view, Yoko Ono: Lumiere de L’aube, is the best place to get an overview. Given its French origin, it may be hard to find. MoMA’s Bookstore is where I got my copy.

In Japan, creating and distributing plans to print a 3-D vagina apparently is.

Given the millennia long history of nudity in Art,and the very conservative(?), somewhat hypocritical, laws in Japan about exposure of “certain parts” of the body, it was only a matter of time until this happened. Well? She has. Megumi Igarashi (aka Rokudenashiko or “good for nothing girl”), self styled “Manko (Vagina) Artist,” has been in the thick of it since her latest arrest in 2014. Early in May she was found guilty of “obscenity electromagnetic recording medium distribution” and fined 400,000 yen, about 4 grand.

I’ve been watching her trials (figuratively- “Japan’s view of pussy is really weird,” she says, and unfortunately, literally) with both fascination and shock. Now that her book “What Is Obscenity?,” has been released (as seen above from Koyama Press) it’s obvious that whatever obscenity is? Her work isn’t it. Just released, copies are scarce. Her “Free Manka”  T-Shirts  are sold out as well. A movement is beginning here- “Manko positivity.” Needless to say, I support her in her quest for Artistic Freedom.

But wait. A “Vagina Artist?” Yes, that’s right. She makes molds of hers and casts them into sculptures, toys and even, a kayak, which she sailed on a river in Tokyo. Tsk tsk, young lady. Depiction of human genetalia is illegal in Japan- used Artistically, or not. I’ve long been fascinated by Japan, for a lot of reasons, a trip there a while back only served to increase, but this is one that makes me wonder- “Why did this take so long to happen?”

From what I’ve seen of her new memoir, which is done in graphic novel (manga) style, she answers a lot of questions, though not that one, and raises many more. It looks to be well done. Not “resting on her laurels,” she is also trying to turn her cartoon character “Manko-chan” (i.e. “Miss Pussy”), seen here on her blog, into a pop culture icon. I wouldn’t bet against it.

Oh! About that hypocrisy? As Jon Stewart and others have pointed out, Japan has an annual festival each April devoted to the penis called the “Kanamara Matsuri” (“Festival of the Steel Phallus”), where penises abound on the streets in the forms of sculptures, veggie carvings and even lollipops. Here, you can see Ms. Igarashi actually posing with one. That picture speaks 400,000 words. It says it all. So far, for her endeavors depicting vaginas, Ms. Igarashi has been in jail twice.

Personally? The only “obscenity” I see here is in the double standard.

Yoko Ono & Linda McCartney- Out Of The Long And Winding Shadows

In NYC there are so many shows going on at any given moment, it’s often possible to find strange, not so strange, and/or enlightening connections among the completely randomly scheduled Art Show bedfellows, and I love exploring them! Recently, there were shows of the Art of two of the Beatles spouses up at the same time- with a show of the work of Linda McCartney, and her and Paul’s daughter, Mary McCartney’s photographs Uptown at the Gagosian Bookstore Gallery, and a double show of 3 new works by Yoko Ono in Chelsea (the same 3 pieces were on view in 2 galleries). To boot, she also took out a full page ad in the Village Voice this past week…about crying.

When I was a kid Asian women, not named Anna May Wong, were seen as quiet, demure, even submissive by most people in the West.

Then along came Yoko Ono on the arm of John Lennon.

“Every man has a woman who loves him
In rain or shine or life or death
If he finds her in this lifetime
He will know when he presses his ear to her breast”*

At first, she seemed quiet, too. She was omnipresent. She appeared to be John’s shadow. But that was mostly because we weren’t familiar with her Art. Most people still aren’t. They took one listen to her music and that was as far as they went.

Art has long been the Beatles “dirty little secret.” People forget, (or would like to), that Paul McCartney paints, John Lennon drew, and had attended the Liverpool College of Art, and both of their famous spouses, among others not famous, are established Artists in their own right. People seemingly didn’t want to know about anything other than the Beatle’s music. Yet, even a casually close look at the Beatles accomplishment shows they were eternally trying to push the envelope creatively. They aspired to “more” than pop music. Just listen to “I Wanna Hold Your Hand,” and “Strawberry Fields Forever” back to back. They aspired to be Artists, and they succeeded more than any other “popular music” group in history, though not in everyone’s mind. Their more “chancier” creations, like the film “Magical Mystery Tour,” which was years ahead of it’s time, got mixed, even bad reviews. Many didn’t get George’s interest in Indian music, and on and on. It was almost like people were saying “shut up and play yer guitar,” to quote Frank Zappa.

Yet all the while, these two Beatles women kept at their craft and followed their own creative voices. Think it’s an accident two Beatles married them? Think again.

In the case of Yoko- She received a lot of  denigration, and worse, from a public who have virtually no experience with the kind of Art she makes, on top of the abuse she received for being “the reason” the Beatles broke up (as absurd as that was). It often seemed like John was one of the few who appreciated her creativity during his lifetime,

“Every woman has a man who loves her
Rise or fall of her life and in death
If she finds him in this life time
She will know when she looks into his eyes”*

It’s already 35 years since John tragically left us way too soon. Still, Yoko has not only survived that horrid death, and all the rest I just mentioned, and carried on, continuously, with her art, her music, her messages, and being her indomitable self.

Artists gonna Art, I say. Her stature continues to rise.

I think she’s one of the most courageous Artists, and women, of our time. Sure, having money no doubt helps, but I bet she still would have kept on keeping on and made her own way, as she was doing before she met John. I bet John would agree and that’s part of why there was “John & Yoko” to begin with.

Linda’s work is well known, well respected and rightly so. Along with Annie Liebovitz, she was one of the first important female rock photo-journalists, even before she became Mrs. Paul McCartney. Oh, yeah…She got a fair bit of grief about that, too. Then, he put her in Wings! HA! (Sing it with me now- “Every woman has a man who loves her…”, above.) Some of her most well-known photos are on display, and available for purchase at prices up to 10,000.00. Right along side are her & Paul’s daughter, Mary’s photos, which are entirely unknown to me. If they had taken down all the title cards, removed the iconic shots among Linda’s, and you walked in without knowing which work was by who- Linda’s or Mary’s, you’d never know. That’s how amazingly symbiotic the eyes of the two photographers are. They see as one.

Walking out, and I say this with nothing but respect, it really felt like Linda had never passed away. That her work continues. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

In Chelsea, Yoko’s 3 works (“Stone Piece,” “Line Piece,” “Mend Piece”), with the overall title “The Riverbed,” are beautifully conceived, and largely left to the viewing public to realize. Yes, that’s right- you get to help Yoko realize her Artwork. How cool is that? Her notes say-“RIVERBED is over the river in-between life and death…” I’ve reproduced the rest-

I watched people lose themselves interacting and creating with the materials provided- string, nails, hammers, scissors and rock in one room at each show, and a pile of broken china, glue, tape, markers on a table with chairs in another room at each location. The participants were of all ages, sexes and races. The shelves for “Mend Piece” in both galleries were stocked full of “reconstructions.” The string “webs” of “Line Piece” were so intricate that they required careful stooping and straddling to navigate the rooms. I came away feeling that Yoko is leaving a legacy among the young, like the Beatles did. This is in addition to the legacy she is creating as an Artist, a female Artist at that, and as a person.

Also, in these shows, she’s breaking down the walls of “What is Art?” and letting everyone in. Art lies in the idea. The Artist is the person realizing it. As such we are all capable of being Artists. And? Art can heal- yourself, even the world!

How beautiful is that?

John Lennon is STILL proud of her. Hopefully now, finally, the rest of us know how right he was about her.

Since she signs everything “I love you,” which is always nice to hear, I’ll reciprocate, since she probably likes hearing it, too-

I love you, too, Yoko.

There…a little piece of the Earth mended. With Love…and Art. Imagine…
